Warehouse Losses Escalate Fast. Is Your Stock Fully Covered?
Warehouse losses can escalate quickly because exposure often extends beyond the building itself. When stock is damaged by fire, theft, or disruption, the financial impact can ripple through cash flow, fulfillment timelines, customer commitments, and broader operational strain, culminating in business interruption.
Recent data shows why this matters. The National Fire Protection Association reports that warehouse structure fires in the US averaged 1,508 incidents a year in 2018 to 2022, causing an average of $323 million in direct property damage annually. It also notes that occupied and operating warehouses accounted for 92% of direct property damage, showing that losses often hit active businesses, not idle sites.

Theft is another growing concern. TT Club’s 2024 cargo theft analysis highlights the US as one of the largest cargo theft hotspots globally, with electronics, food and beverage, metals, clothing, and vehicle parts among the most targeted categories.

The wider issue is interruption. Allianz Commercial’s analysis of more than 1,000 business interruption claims over five years found that fire is the most frequent driver of BI claims and accounts for more than a third of total claim value at 36%.

For businesses holding significant stock, the question is not only whether the warehouse is insured, but whether the stock inside is adequately covered too.
